He is also correct about our having de facto slavery until the1930's e.g. black chain gangs in the south. Social science knows how to address things like gang violence and poverty, but the Republicans have been in control for 40 years and don't have a clue about how to run a civilized society and don't really care. The problems with gangs, ghettos and poverty can be traced back to the destruction of the New Deal and social safety nets by the right wing, a takeover by the plutocrats making us 65th in the world in income inequality, destruction of the public school system by the right wing e.g. increasing education costs, and a lack of free pre schools and affordable college. If we as a society applied the proper social science to our failing society we could repair it But the Republicans seem incapable of understanding complex problems or solutions e.g. Nancy Raygun's stupid drug plan of "just say no". That was never going to work and could be seen from day one. And how many hundreds of billions have we spent on that and how many innocent people have we put in jail by that dumb ass idea? The problems with our society result from our being ignorant and nothing else. And the problems will not be solved until the people have enough sense to vote in liberal democrats to run the country! <<You make the typical argument and it's not without merit. But not everyone is willing to accept that anymore. The two black families I mentioned wouldn't listen to you for a minute. They are disgusted, angry and yet trapped by their skin color in a society in which vestiges of the old time racism still exists. In fact, blacks in general are divided on where responsibility for black woes lies. I read a recent Pew poll and will track it down for you. Like I said, I see a new kind of racism emerging around me but it is fractured into groups and sub-groups that cross all kinds of color lines. I suspect it will get worse, too, because we finally have an economy in this country which can't make room for all the people trying to participate.
