Epicure has very nicely explained what I had in mind when I made that statement. I see now the mistake I made when I limited that suggestion to "black children" because I've also seen my share of white children trapped in a cycle of poverty over in eastern Arkansas where we have farming interests. It was simply that I spoke up within the context of a running discussion of black culture.

One of my daughters adopted a 3 yr. old out of foster care. She had been abused, neglected, and extremely malnourished. Knew one color, no numbers and classified as non-verbal by the state of Utah. The time and effort she and I put in to get that little girl up to speed developmentally was surprising. I came to believe there are perhaps windows of opportunity in an infant's development that when missed are not easily overcome, and I had this experience in my mind when I spoke out.

FWIW, I wonder if you look for racism all the time. I say this because of other things you've said....even once in a private post. Your son is probably a grown man now, but if not, let me suggest that searching for bigotry would be a poisonous, negative atmosphere for him to grow up in. This opinion is also one based on experience and I hope you don't take it as an insult.
