There is one alternative with less impact, which is reusables. But no one in his right mind is going to tolerate that inconvenience.

Uh.......we already do in Seattle, Portland, SF and LA. Its annoying at first and then it becomes the norm.

Remember paper bags, Dave? They bio-degrade. Besides, it an opportunity for some company to invent a bio-degradable substitute.
