In fact, the California Department of Public Health recommends the following:

"When selecting packages of meat, poultry, or fish, consider putting the packages in clear plastic bags to prevent .. contamination." and

"Fresh produce should e placed in clear plastic bags to help protect the items from contamination." and

"Meat, poultry and fish should be placed in SEPARATE reusable bags from other items." and

"Non-food items should be placed in SEPARATE reusable bags from food products."

So, the bottom line is, wash the bags frequently AND use plastic.
