That's the wild card, isn't it? Sort of like in the pre-WWII years when chemical weapons was the fear.

Personally, I don't think anyone is willing to press the button. But Putin may have walled himself off into a strong enough bubble where he has started to believe his own propaganda. The downing of MH17 would have been the time to reverse course, but he decided to double down instead.

So it is up to you Europeans. Not unsurprisingly, Sweden is way ahead of Germany on this. Germany has maneuvered themselves to the top of the EU and has a very cushy spot. I can understand their reluctance to upset the status quo, but by being the de facto leader of the EU means they have to shoulder some responsibilities that they been able to slide onto America's plate in the past.
