Massive credibility is what Apple would provide that Google and others are so seriously lacking in.

It is that simple to most.

Some customer awareness? I'm not even aware of any payment system that works with iPhones, other than PayPal and Starbucks.
If by awareness you mean better marketing, I think you're right. But I was referring to the actual technology or platform capabilities themselves. Big banks, wireless providers, merchants, and others have made pretty aggressive attempts, and don't overlook the fact that they have made serious inroads. Mobile payments are a huge business. But they're not very "mainstream" yet and there's no overwhelmingly common/dominant player. Apple does have a high-income user base, but as we saw with some posts a few weeks ago, even in the US high-priced segment, they no longer dominate. So sheer numbers of wealthy customers isn't enough by itself. (Not to mention, mobile payments aren't necessarily going to be a thing for well-heeled people anyway... they might even turn out to be more of a bargain-finding tool than a luxury.) Existing technology is very secure, but maybe it needs to be more secure. Will Apple provide that, and how? Existing technology is easy to use, but maybe Apple will make it easier. If so, how? That's what I was driving at. As I mentioned before, I think a key way they (or anyone else trying this) could succeed would be to make auto-selecting card choices.
