NORAD: Unresponsive plane now over Cuba

The Virginian-Pilot
© September 5, 2014 A small plane being escorted by F-15s this afternoon over the Atlantic Ocean under the direction of the North American Aerospace Defense Command has gone into Cuban air space and the escort has ended.

The plane took off this morning from Rochester, N.Y., with a flight plan to Naples, Fla., the agency, known as NORAD, announced on Twitter.

One of the posts notes that the unresponsive pilot could be a case of “possible hypoxia,” a condition caused by a lack of oxygen to the body. Later, the agency posted an update that the plane had entered Cuban air space and the jets ended the escort.

The plane is a Socata TBM-700 light business and utility aircraft, according to a third post on the agency's page, which notes:

"Occupants unresponsive to #NORAD attempts to communicate."

No other details were immediately available.

The incident comes less than a week after a small plane was escorted by F-16s after the pilot of the small aircraft flying from Waukesha, Wis., to Manassas lost contact with air traffic controllers for more than an hour.

The fighter pilots who flew alongside the Cirrus-SR22 saw that the pilot, a Wisconsin man, was unconscious and escorted the aircraft until it crashed off Chincoteague.

The National Transportation Safety Board was investigating that case

NORAD seems to be on the job. A good thing.
