However if it is made too efficient :The cards that offer 5% on specific categories would likely stop that feature - the idea is to get the customer used to carrying and using that card - how many people strictly remember when and for which category the 5% applies. If the customer uses the card pretty much only for 5% (made efficient whatever process) then the incentive for the company diminishes greatly.
Yup. That's a fear I have. I love getting what I value as a 9% discount on everything I spend on Amazon (by loading my Amz account with GC credit purchased at office supply stores that earn 5 UR points that transfer to 5 miles that I value at 1.8 cents each :-) Make it so everyone does this with ease and the opportunity will likely die.

However, no mater how easy the game is made, there will always be *some* other opportunity and best-available card/deal/coupon/reward, as it's the nature of companies competing for marginal increases in sales.

Yes, it works too. I can't be bothered to carry more than one card, but I have swapped out which card I use for everything depending on promotions. This is certainly an arbitrage opportunity, but it's not sustainable. Unless you carry a balance, credit card companies don't have the margin to pay users back 5% on every transaction.
