Granted, there has been a bit of weakness in the tech stocks during the last few weeks. I'm not sure Microsoft is a good example since it is virtually unchanged from three weeks ago, despite the temporary DOJ injunction.

Oracle has come off by about a third over the same period. But here there was significant news that has affected people's assessment of the company's medium-term prospects. These concerns, rightly or wrongly, have spilled over to other software companies, particularly those with some exposure to Asian markets.

Now, MGI has also dropped by almost a third over the past three weeks. What has happened? It is it just the general malaise affecting tech stocks or is it something more substantial? Well, the PC Magazine article certainly didn't help. MGI has been very effective in the past hyping the company in its press releases about the awards its products have won. This is one they will be sure not to mention. Now that digital photography is on the map, the company can no longer point to award-winning products, or even dominant market share -- that honour now goes to Microsoft Picture It!

As is often the case, it is not the first mover that wins in the end. Despite a valiant effort, MGI is falling behind. Check out the scanners and PCs in Future Shop and see what image editing software they are now bundling. You will more likely see Photo Deluxe than PhotoSuite. To change that, MGI will at least need its products to make Editors Choice. Then no one will think its products are inferior. Do you think they are up to the challenge?
