Dave:

I have been following Lernout and Hauspie for 2 years now. It is definitely a strong player in the voice recgnition business. However, it is important to consider the competition. If Lernnout is going to take 50 percent marketshare in speech recognition products then its current valuation is justifiable. Being priced at a over 0.5 billion dollars implies that the market thinks L&H is going to be the leading company in an emerging market. However, any suspicion that it may not be the case will drop the price down to more reasonable level - like in the 20s. However, if L&H does what McCaffy did to virus scanning ( another software application that almost every PC needs), it could be worth a few billion dollars in a few years. You may want to look at a long term stock chart for Mccaffy (they changed their name recently).

Has their been a good discussion on the competition on this thread. I see IBM as a big threat. Other companies include - BBN (GTE), Lucent, Dragonsystems, and Dialogic. Anybody know of any other heavyweights. A small company called Applied Language Technology has also announced recent alliances.
