I got that. Just being unacceptably cryptic. The dependent variable, however, is all these cases is a mental state. And the only way one studies is that is via working on trying to get the concepts and operationalizations and methodology to the best level possible. And, of course, there is always the truth that the social sciences don't work in the realm of true/false. But rather in the realm of probabilities.
