My wife's not a big reader either. Me, I devour books. I lament that my favorite authors aren't more prolific. Feed the beast!
That professor was using a pretty narrow measure, if you ask me. But I will concede that our best achievers need to be big readers. No other way to gain mastery of a subject than read, read, read. Even in this embryonic age of on-line subject searches. In my own field (chemistry) all the real doers have an awesome grasp of the primary literature, which means heavy library time.
Where am I going with this? In circles probably. I feel compelled to make my post long enough. Probably a bad habit from school: "write a 500-word essay...". I had a very terse style, like the stuff stamped on Army materiel. Hitting the word limit invariably involved verbal featherbedding.
I'm finally getting pretty good at it.
