Mike,

Let's see some numbers, not just words from a journalist.
Who is buying NT & what for? NT doesn't even compete in
the same market as SUNW's enterprise & departmental servers.
Who are they trying to kid anyway?

SUNW introduced the Enterprise 450 line last quarter with
Solaris for workgroup servers (MSFT's market). It's better
hardware, dollar for dollar, and faster that the FASTEST
PC server available from Compaq. The workgroup software is
less expensive than NT. This is SUNW's low-end product
offering & it kicks MSFT & Intel in the ass, so where does
this idiot at Wired get his statistics? From Encarta? From
Dataquest? or maybe the Redmond database?

This "expert" (DePalma) sounds like a mole. My advice to
you would be to ignor him & send a nasty reply to Wired.

cheers,

cherylw

Interesting. I'll respond. If the latest news is correct.
Sun has already achieved more than half of its numbers at
the half way mark for this quarter. Does that mean weaker
server sales? No. Servers are growing about 25% a quarter
like always. The problem is with workstation, it is getting
pummelled. Because Sun is late with several new products.
Nevertheless, there is a good chance that SUN will hit or
exceed its number.

My opinion of the person who wrote the article? He doesn't
really know what he is talking about. Since he seems to be
mixing PC and server numbers together.

Not a very good article to read, especially if you are a Sun shareholder. What
is your opinion on this article Addi ?

Don't Blame Asia: The Trouble's at Home
wired.com
Companies like Sun and IBM were beginning to show weak server sales last
quarter. "And we're hearing rumblings of continuing weak server sales in the
fourth quarter as well," DePalma said. Watch for Sun to be at the top of that list,
but Hewlett-Packard and Silicon Graphics could suffer too. "But blame that on
Redmond, not Rangoon or Bangkok," DePalma said. "Companies are turning to
lower cost solutions like Windows NT."

Mike, your don't seriously believe this type of "PR"-like report, do you? These types of stories hit the wire everyday or week, and yet SUN continues to grow 25+%, earning-wise every year, and yes, it includes the last "weak" quarter. And their return on equity is impressive more than ever! That's the ultimate test. To me, buying a stock is like buying a business, I buy their management, their steady earnings and their superb return on equity without a lot of debts. After that, I will remain as a "cheer-leader" on the sideline.

Hi Mike:

Re: the article you mentioned

The article says: "And we're hearing rumblings of continuing weak server sales in the fourth quarter as well," DePalma said. First of all what is meant by we're hearing rumblings..."? And secondly who is this DePalma? The artcile refers to him as Don DePalma an analyst from Forrester (whatever that is)! The key word here is analyst! Since I have a very low opinion of all analysts (regardless of them having the same views as I or not!), I view them as nothing but a bunch of con-artists! Therefore any opinion I give you with regard to this article will be extremely biased against everything said in that article!

However, my personal thoughts on the server sales in the 4th Quarter, based on the software work I am doing and from what I have seen to be the trend in the industry can only make me conclude that the demand for servers have increased dramatically (both for UNIX servers as well as NTs working with UNIX). And since Sun is in the lead position I can only assume that they are (and will continue to) enjoy the most revenue gains.

I think we just have to wait till the Q4 results. If I am wrong then I say well Addi you were worng a little in your assumptions since my primary job is not being an analyst, however if I am proven to be correct I wonder if Mr. Don DePalma (the so called con-artist/analyst) can truly fit his foot in his mouth and will our (at least my) curosity with this regard ever be answered!

Regards,

Addi Jamshidi
