Solectron isn't the bottleneck here. TI still builds the DMD die and assembles them themselves. I don't believe anyone else in the world would be capable of doing that portion of the manufacturing. TI sends the assembled DMD to Solectron who attaches it plus the remainder of the components to the board(s), then assembles these boards into a mechanical assembly and boom! you have the guts of a DMD system.

TI then sells these guts to Projectavision who wraps their case and user interface (plugs, buttons, etc) around it and tacks on a cool $4000 or so (I don't know exactly what TI sells the guts for, nor do I know exactly what PJTV gets for the unit when it sells to retailers/wholesalers).

The real problem seems to be the ability of TI to manufacture the DMD die. It is an incredibly complex micro-electromechanical machine (replicated 800x600 times) on a 1" square piece of silicon. Yields suck and it is such a radical technology that not very many people know how to proceed and no one has experience.

I was willing to pay $8,000 for a PJTV unit but not $10,000. SOrry PJTV - my business is going to Sony for a 61" XBR at < 1/2 the price. Albeit not quite as good of a picture, but everyone has a price and mine was $4000 more over the Sony.
