But bacteria are clearly metabolizing artificial sweeteners into something which we then absorb and develop sugar intolerance from. That's in mice with a diet lacking in free added sugars, so it's not due to any change in the population of bacteria which metabolize sugars.

Read the lab results in the original journal. Without gut bacteria (deleted with antibiotics) artificial sweeteners don't cause sugar intolerance. Without gut bacteria artificial sweeteners means nothing to our bodies. But with gut bacteria, artificial sugars cause sugar-like effects.
