MAJOR MOMENTUM

The Dallas Morning News
Mon, Dec 15 1997

Sony Corp. is gaining some serious sales momentum for PlayStation.
The Japanese electronics giant sold more than 1 million of
the game consoles last month. To put that in context, Sony
has sold 6.4 million PlayStations in North America since they
were introduced in September 1995.

Why the sudden boom? Sony officials believe the company has reached
a critical mass of available software titles. The PlayStation now
has more than 300 titles available. Among the most popular are NFL
GameDay '98 and Final Fantasy VII, a role-playing game.

The traditional market for electronic games is 6- to 14-year-old
boys, said Jeff Fox, a spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment
America. But the company has been trying to attract other family
members, he said.

A furry character in the game Crash Bandicoot 2, for example, is
intended to appeal to boys and girls equally, Mr. Fox said.
