I'm curious what you mean by 'slash and burn' agriculture across the south? The lore is that they would move into an area, clear it for planting, continue doing so until the soil was depleted, then move on to the next area. The lore is they were always moving west. Summer before last I spent a month in your neck of the woods with my youngest daughter. One of the things I really enjoyed was the full day spent on Ellis Island. Ellis Island is an amazing place. I agree. Everyone should tour it at some time.
