Huge cable box deal possible

Microsoft and Intel reportedly are discussing the production and
sale of as many as 10 million new cable-TV boxes to
TeleCommunications Inc. in a deal worth as much as $3 billion.
TCI's specifications for the next-generation decoder devices
suggest a revolution in the cable business which would have
subscribers also getting access to the Internet, Net telephony and
video on demand services, according to Monday's report in The Wall
Street Journal. Englewood, Colo.-based TCI has set this as the
deadline for the submission of technical and financial proposals
to supply the boxes which the Journal describes as "network
computers." The report says that during last week's cable TV trade
show in California, there were indications Microsoft and Intel
were in final negotiations.
