they have said that they initially transferred $100m and later increased this sum to $271m. I would assume that these are simply part of their "Medical Expenses" in the Income Statement.Settlement will occur via providers setting off their claims against this sum. I would assume that they will not retain anything much of this money. I think we should regard it as "lost", so to say.

As can be seen in the balance sheet data history, the claims reserves declined from 03/31/97 to 09/30/97 in the face of rising members enrolllment. This IMO is the direct consequence of this fron-up payment. Otherwise claims reserves should rise more or less in line with enrollment, I'd say.
