but to me this was a slam dunk that the larger phone was going to hammer the competition for a solid year.

IMHO, you are correct, but the slam dunk part is a bit ironic given the years of faithful Apple fans who trash talked phablets, only to now decide that they really are nice!

I think Apple did it the wise way given the loyalty of their customers: They got 5 cycles of small phones, and now they can sell them all big phones.

I think Apple will have a smashing good year off of large phones, and it is likely to impact Samsung, as well as more impact on the PC/notebook market, as the larger phones for richer customers will continue to force the evolution of PC "replacement" by mobile gadgets. As they are used more, more energy and innovation goes into figuring out how to make them more useful, which leads to more use....

Can they make enough phones?
According to Foxconn they are making about 560k phones a day now.
“We have been churning out 140,000 iPhone 6 Plus and 400,000 iPhone 6 every day, the highest daily output ever, but the volume is still not enough to meet the preorders,” said a person familiar with the matter.http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2014/09/17/foxconn-struggles-to-meet-new-iphone-demand/
This article says Pegatron will produce 50% of iPhone 6s (4.7inch).

But the number they put on that was 25 million by end of 2014. If these numbers are true, then your 65million wag looks achievable with room to spare. 400k * 100 days = 40 million + 20 million from Foxxconn = 60 million iPhone 6. And another 14m iPhone 6 Plus.

74 Million total produced from now til end of year. Add to that the 10 million (or so) already delivered = 84 million by end of 2014.

Update: Foxconn claims they are producing 80%. But expect 80 million orders by end of
Orders for both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus are expected to reach 80 million units by the end of this year, and 200 million next year, the report said.year. wantchinatimes.com
