There is no ice breaking on Superior during the winter. It occurs in the spring as the shipping season sets to resume. It can vary greatly from season to season. For a typical season, ports are closed from mid-Dec to late March. 2014 was quite an exception with the first saltie arriving May 8, and that required quite a bit of assistance.
