32X DVD-ROM drives becoming popular in Taiwan? Perhaps they mean DVD-ROMs that operate in the CD-ROM mode at 32X......................japanbiztech.com 32x DVD-ROM Drives to Rule Mart as Prices Fall December 16, 1997 (TAIPEI) -- The fall in the price of high-end 32x DVD-ROM drives in Taiwan is attracting consumers, and these models are gradually replacing 24x as the mainstream products in the market. Competition is heated in Taiwan's optical disc drive market, since prices of DVD-ROM drives showed a downturn and DVD-RAM drives stepped in and raised their profile in the market with lower prices. DVD-ROM drives are now a common peripheral for personal computers in Taiwan. During the Taipei Computer Expo, a trade show lasting a large portion of the month of December, most companies are offering PCs with 24x DVD-ROM drives. PCs with drives that can program data into optical discs also are on display at the trade show. In the local retail market for information products, DVD-ROM drives with speeds lower than 24x have been almost completely phased out. Some 24x models are even selling at prices of NT$2,000 or less. Most 32x models currently sell for just over NT$3,000. Advanced Information Inc., an affiliate of Acer Group and the owner of the A/Open brand, plans to lower the price of its 32x products to below this level. This trend is bound to cut into the market for 24x products, say observers, and 32x DVD-ROM drives are thus expected to dominate the market in the first quarter of 1998. Luxury products such as DVD-RAM drives also have seen their prices drop as scores of major computer companies are now beginning to make such products. Local information product distributors point out that prices of 32x DVD-ROM drives are at a much more competitive level than ever before. If the price falls off the NT$3,000 support level, 24x models are bound to lose their status as the mainstream product in the market, they add. As for DVD-RAM drives, distributors say that such products are not likely to become a household item in the near future, as their price is still high at around NT$10,000 a piece.
