I can't say much about the Galaxy Note 4, but in general I find that Samsung takes a shotgun approach to innovation.

It sounds like your criticism is related more to risk-taking with specific companies trying new features than of all Android devices themselves. There are certainly pros and cons to this approach. For example, NFC, custom-keyboards, notifications, and 4G LTE data were all available years ago on some Android devices, only to be adopted by Apple much later, once they were seen to be popular and useful. On the other hand, other features never took off and were disliked, such as many of those present in "bloatware"-heavy phones. A nice thing about Android phones are that you don't need to use a particular brand or model if you're weary of aggressive innovation or particular features - you have a lot of choice.

Given your poor experience many years ago with a nascent Android device, it's understandable that you have a bad taste in your mouth, but I urge you to give a test run to something like the new Moto X, which is a very pure phone, simple as can be (doesn't even require syncing to move from phone to phone - everything can be done automatically), and has very powerful and yet refined features that are impossible to dislike. I'd be curious to hear how the simple experience you described in upgrading your iPhone would compare.
