Self awareness evolves like any other trait.
Chimps and Dolphins are also aware of themselves, but they don't seem to be as intensely aware as humans. Like any other trait it would become more prevalent when it confers a survival advantage in the context of the creature that develops it. Any self aware organism has the potential of despair at the thought if it's own mortality and that would act as a check on it's usefulness.
