Android phone makers have an incredibly difficult time making a profit. There are reasons for that.
Yup. Competition. Great for consumers because the competition is cut-throat and leads to rapid improvement and innovation, but also causes many to fail, lose money. This is part of the I think it would behoove Apple to open their devices to other operating systems. They could have the best of both worlds. Maintain their monopoly on iOS, but tap into the market for those who love their hardware, will pay for it, but would choose to run a different OS on it. They're wildly profitable not, so you can only imagine what such an arrangement would do for the bottom line.
