No one knows why stock prices jitter. Short interest is completely inscrutable. If you're long call short stock, why should you care about fluctuations? Especially evident when a stock has a specialist is the fact that as prices advance the market machinery forces the specialist to have an ever growing short position. The short interest is largest at the top! You never know when it's largest. OTC shorts are primarily large hedged institutions. They own 100K long and 20K short. They just add and subtract to these relative allocations based on arbitrary parameters. Tells you nothing about price tendencies. Price doesn't need desperate short covering to race upward. If there is a paucity of sellers, a small demand of new longs can do the same.
