That Herodotus or any others inflated those numbers even increases support for my thesis, this is all the work of mortal men, that religion et al, is similar creation/fabrication of the human emerging intelligence & imagination, and each tries to embody that "big world out there" idea.

Man created religion would be the final thesis, you just proved that to by your Herodotus example.

You see along with that "big world out there" idea that the Greeks did pretty well with their geometry (Egyptian inspired btw) exploring & figuring out distances in amazing accuracies, they also started the ball rolling with exploration of the human psyche as well.

Not only a big world out there, but the Greeks decide to also turn their attention to explore the world inside us as well. This is the big sea change of human history we see happening 500BC, that man/human primate becomes more self aware of himself in details, which were once projections into the "gods".

Later the Greeks start to explore the human physiology & begin to see how vast the human body is, 75,000 miles of nervous systems & overlapping organ systems that compose & make up our whole. Any physician today marvels at it still but this psychological, astronomical & physiological summa of nature, well the Hebrews dont even come close.

You underestimate the Hellen world pointing to pagan gods, you are ignorant of what was really going on from 500BC on in terms of human exploration and those fellows opened many doors. As well as they created the first pan cosmopolitan empire.

Always remembering that the Egyptians had a powerful impact on the Greeks to, especially math, astronomy agriculture & medicine probably..and so much more. All is interrelated.

And you cant wear your god like a pin on the lapel of your jacket, like a political button, thats not what that "big world idea" was ever about, it certainly transcends locales & politics, theres the big world inside to, which is what we call "Human Nature" for a very good reason.

Science does not conflict with religion, sorry, thats your bugaboo.
