Give us a break TP. Function and origin are completely different categories. Remember, you have artificially and arbitrarily restricted your answers to strictly unconscious, materialistic processes.

If you were honest (and your answers bring that into question) you would just admit that you do not know of any materialistic mechanism that could explain how consciousness could arise spontaneously from unconscious matter.

You think "lifeless bits of silicon and copper" are self aware?

It's really amazing to see a lifeless bit of silicon and copper recognize and respond to a stimulus such as a conversation. (The NSA likes to tell you that they don't have near enough people to listen to all the phone calls they monitor, but they do have plenty of computers which can follow a conversation well enough to get that conversation of a list for further review).
