The bell is aware of when it is struck. It responds with a sound. It doesn't have to be conscience of the fact it was struck and thereby made a sound in order for it to do it.

Other awareness can be more complex.

Really?! Did he drop out of school in Nimrod, Texas in the third grade!? Bells are normally hung—unless they have been found guilty of extremely odious charges such as nudity!
