As interesting as current technology is, I fail to see how human exploitation and manipulation of the physical properties of various sorts of matter is in any way analogous to consciousness. However, even if you could demonstrate that it was, you still have the problem of how properties like volition, emotion, reasoning, intelligence, morality and indeed life itself, could simply arise from inorganic matter.
