He was using the example of broccoli responding to the stimuli of light & growing new leaves, this is an order of magnitude of awareness, though far down on the evolutionary chain of complexity (& consciousness.)

He could have used another vegetable example, though lacking the evolved complexity of brain matter, spinal columns & advanced neural networks.... and that would be you.

In a class of unique vegetables that apparently inhale too many noxious fumes. (put the pipe down)

I was wondering what word you would use that applies to both living and non-living things.
