"Awareness", in the technical fields I used to haunt, described information or signals which both had a path to the receiver and had been generated in time to be at the receiver.

In learning circuits sometimes a signal is presented and it doesn't generate any noticeable change at the output. If you think that the output should have been affected then one of the first things you check is whether the system should have been "aware" of the signal. often signals aren't getting where they belong at the precise time they belong there. Also a path may have been closed at the crucial time.

At any rate, if you determine the receiver was "aware" of the signal then it is usually a training issue.

Awareness has a much more general concept to me than just consciousness.
