Good Morning, Eric! About Novell & Intel, synergy & opportunities:

>Have you heard anything?<

I promised not to discuss specifics of some of the things that I've heard.

>If Novell and Intel were to announce a new joint marketing program for thier networking & Hardware products, would this occur 1QTR 1998? Keep your eyes on INTEL tomorrow as a "Press Announcement" to analysts is scheduled between INTEL (Enterprise Server Group)and Sun Microsystems (SunSoft's business Unit).<

Andy Grove has been on Public TV commenting that he considers Sun's revenue to be 'mostly SW derived' and would like to see them target their SW to Intel Chipsets instead of Sparc exclusively ... we might be seeing some of this starting to happen soon. Also Intel is working hard to improve the performance of Java on Intel HARDWARE and FRIMWARE (ROM code) ... ie below the OS level in the system structure (Novell folks are involved in this work with Intel).

In Marketing terms there are potential benefits to Novell that have the capability to put Novell code in EVERY PC shipped, it is not necessarily the best approach for Novell or Sun to 'joint market' with Intel ... IMHO it would probably be better for them to 'cross license' some technology ... so that Intel could include either Novell (probably Wolf Mountain or Directory) code and/or some Sun (JVM and/or 'hot spot') code within Intel products. This would actually change the entire marketplace and 'tilt' the playing field in Novell's favour. I dunno how far they will really go, but I'm pretty sure these options have (and maybe still are) being discussed.

Hi Eric! ... I think this is the Sun/Intel announcement you were expecting URL:

sun.com

Clipping from Story:

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 16, 1997 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc., and Intel Corporation today announced that they are cooperating to optimize Sun's Solaris operating environment for Intel's future Merced processor. Sun will deliver a 64-bit optimized version of the Solaris software for Merced at the time of Merced-based system availability, expected in 1999.

I think there will be even more shoes to drop soon!
