Nothing like the fervor of newly converted black robed 'acolytes', there's no zealout fantatics like the righteous born again variety. Keep them fueld with constant combustible mix of messianic prophecy,propaganda, slogans & chants, promise of heavenly rewards, all led to creation of new class of jobs of 'church enforcers'. Especially for unemployed peasant youth but many others as well. No little Virginia, they weren't going peacefully door to door like Jehova's witnesses or Mormons, there were vicious sectarian conflicts, doctrinal disputes mostly over verbal 'air', these religious propagandas were just new fancy mythologies to replace the old. You think your little troll 'friend' would have fit right in? For the pagan it came down to the final solution, die or convert, just as later it came to pass for the Jews, until once again that Classical writings, wisdom of Humanism returns to break some of this spell of 'god intoxicated' fueld superstition. The monks were often formed, or formed themselves, into black-robed squads for the execution of the Church's business, first to smash up pagan temples, later to rampage through the streets in time of doctrinal controversy. Monasticism attracted misfits, bankrupts, criminals, homosexuals, fugitives as well as the pious; it was also a career for raw peasant youths who could be drilled into well-disciplined monkish regiments to be deployed as an unscrupulous bishop might think fit
