Excellent post Bill, here are some comments/predictions:

- The upcoming Intel 3D chip is the i740, not i760.

Predictions for 98:

1. Banshee ships and breaks all 2D benchmarks.
2. At least one motherboard OEM deal is announced when Banshee ships. I actually think these guys are lining up to get on the 3Dfx bandwagon and to be the first to have a 3Dfx chip on their MB.
3. A major PC vendor like Dell switches to a 3Dfx based offering for their most powerful systems. Dell in particular seems to show no loyalty to graphics card vendors, they generally put the best available on their best systems. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Millennium 2 / Voodoo 2 combination advertised next year.
4. A 3Dfx investor is a HAPPY investor.

Gary.

Bill,

re: What happens if the whole PC becomes nothing more than a CPU, a DVD/CD-ROM, a cheap removable high-speed drive, telephone/cable modem, and a 3dfx Banshee?

You're on the right track, but a little behind on the level of integration that you will see in these types of systems. The MXi from Cyrix will only lack RAM and disk. I expect integrated 2D/3D graphics performance to be comparable to Banshee. In addition, DVD MPEG2 video and AC3 audio, 56K modem, memory controller, and just about everything else will be integrated with a greater than PentiumII performance processor for about $150. The MXI is scheduled for release in the second half of next year and will have massive fab capacity behind it.

Pravin.
