First of all, it is indeed possible; it seems that American Samoa completely avoided the 1918 flu epidemic that killed millions, including up to one-fourth of the population in neighboring Western Samoa, by quarantining itself. And if the CDC director is against quarantine, then we shouldn’t be quarantining Thomas Eric Duncan’s family members either, right?

From the article by CDC -----

Let's go back to 1917----------what was known as the "Spanish Flu"

We lost two Great Grandparents in New York City because of the epidemic. My husband's mother was left an orphan within the family. She was the 'only' child. Her life is a fascinating story to be written about.

I have always wondered how they got the disease. Research reveals ideas --------but nothing definitive.

The Great Grandparents were young, in the prime of their life--------an aspiring Lawyer on Park in the City and his wife a musician . Pictures of the era can give some clues---------shipping, immigrants from Europe coming in through Ellis Island--------from the seafaring nations.

Now lets forward to the present day-------when AIDS became prevalent in the 1990's ; China required proof of a person not having AID'S to enter China from America in the late 1990's. One had to have medical proof showing no infection with AIDS.

Also, there were a series of tests and vaccines that had to be up to date. However, it was being free of AIDS that determine whether or not you would be admitted to China for travel.

It appears that one of the difficulties with the Ebola crud is that we appear to have no test for it before the symptoms appear. We only know after the fact and Ebola claims the next person.

I suspect the same was true of the 1918 Spanish Flu----people got sick and had nothing to combat the illness and died.

Believe it or not the place they lived in New York City still stands in a lovely area of Brooklyn and has a new family --------over a 100 years since these Great Grandparents died and left their enfant daughter an orphan to be raised by relatives.

Banning travel is better than bombing the H out of people.
