The leaders of the time of course keep more than one goal in mind at a time. The muslims and indians would probably have come under pressure anyway, but the timing involved having a bunch of soldiers who were running out of people to kill. Just look at the way the problem was handled at the end of the crusades -- The pope tried to have the majority of the army killed. (Many escaped to switzerland where they to this day keep an armed guard to "protect" the pope). The romans solved the problem by settling veteran soldiers on the edges of the expanding empire. When that no longer worked the soldiers caused problems, especially in the west.
