World history did not unfold as major events at the same time in all places (at least until the modern age). The great migration period which brought the Huns, Goths, Slavs, Alans and many other central asian groups to Europe resulted in the patchwork of ethnicity that still creates problems in Ukraine and Georgia. It is not a coincidence that that is the same time period in which the western roman empire began to collapse.
