I know this is old stuff for you guys,
but I just figured it out now :-)

the number of shorted ASND shares has increased from
22087641 in October to 23474477 in November
1997
source nasd.com

how can one use these numbers besides
worrying that it's a bigger number ?
They say nothing
about the price level the stock was sold at ?

COMPAQ: Compaq shareholders approve increase in authorized shares

DEC 15, 1997, M2 Communications - Shareholders of Compaq Computer
Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) approved an increase in authorized shares of
Compaq common stock. This action permits Compaq to carry out a
two-for-one stock split that was approved by Compaq's Board of
Directors in October. [GCK Comment: And the action leaves about 1.5 billion authorized
shares left over for other business purposes]

"This stock split reflects our confidence in Compaq's long-term
growth," said Benjamin M. Rosen, Chairman. "The stock split will also
make it easier for individuals to invest in Compaq."

Shareholders of record as of December 31, 1997, will receive one
additional share of common stock for every one share they own on that
date.
The shares being distributed in the stock split will be recorded
in book-entry form in stockholder accounts on January 20, 1998.
Compaq's outstanding shares will formally reflect the two-for-one stock
split and trade on a post-split basis on January 21, 1998.
