I agree,
(although I took the trouble once to determine if the question of god was unknowable).

The way I see it, God is a lot like the NBA. No, I don't think God plays basketball. It's similar in the way that I really don't care about basketball and never think about it or read the sport page or wonder who would be on my fantasy team. I would happly never hear about basketball except for the fact that people I know and people I care about have an interest in the games.

So, I watch some basketball because my nephew really likes the Spurs and I like my nephew and that can be an opportunity to hang with him for a couple hours and drink beer. Similarly I go to churches or synagogs , generally for weddings or funerals, and manage not to kick over the icons.

I think it's silly to spend much time or money on basketball games and paraphernalia, but nobody makes me watch a game or buy a T-shirt. Religion starts to skirt a different area. The religous seem compelled to make people observe a moment of silence, or ignore their family planning, or grant tax exemptions. That is just plain wrong.
