Oh, that expansionsm would have taken place except the real "god" that is the world had other ideas, which came in the forms of the Persians, Greeks & Romans to name a few.

They did attempt some small empire building (Herod, Jannaeus, Maccabees) but like their late cobbled down fictions about themselves, they were late to that party too & were only tiny federated tribes puffing themselves up to begin with.

Imagine the Greek city-states in their prime, then look at that lighter shaded area at the base of your little thumb nail for perspective. Later on they do get into a little mischief, its all in a very small area which might have gotten as far as Nabotean valleys or over to Gaza.
