MGI Software Sets Industry Milestone in PC Photography Software 1997/12/16 MGI PhotoSuite Consistent Leader in Retail and OEM Sales Since Launching Category TORONTO, ONTARIO--MGI Software Corp., the leader in PC Photography and Video Publishing software, today announced that unit shipments of its award-winning MGI PhotoSuite have surpassed 9.5 million units worldwide. The consumer photo software market, a segment that has attracted some of the largest software companies, is expected to grow to more than US $220 million by the year 2001. The milestone entrenches MGI Software's leadership in PC Photography, a category it first helped launch in 1995.
During the past two years, MGI has consistently led retail and OEM sales with MGI PhotoSuite. Earlier this year, Dataquest analysts recognized MGI's pioneering efforts and ranked the company the number one vendor of Windows photo software for consumers, based on units shipped worldwide in 1996. The company expects to repeat this record performance in 1997.
According to PC Data reports measuring sell-through in U.S. retail stores, MGI PhotoSuite is in a neck-and-neck lead on year-to-date unit sales. "The photo category is experiencing phenomenal growth," said Ann Stephens, president of PC Data. "And MGI has shown to be a player with consistent sales growth since its inception." It's not unusual for competitors to experience peaked sales with a new product introduction, however, MGI has maintained its unit sales growth without any major product upgrade. PC Data numbers represent approximately 70 per cent of total U.S. retail software purchases.
Home and business PC users have made MGI PhotoSuite one of the most popular Windows software programs for its ease of use, richness of features, graphic performance, and reasonable price. "MGI PhotoSuite is the product I go to first whenever I have to open or index images, convert images to Web format, or do fast edits on my computer," said Jack McNerney, owner and president of M&A Digital in Parker, Colorado. "PhotoSuite is a terrific complement for its ease of use to professional programs which are difficult to use and suited to more complex time-consuming work."
MGI has achieved widespread recognition as a Photo Marketing Association (PMA) member for its product innovation with the photo retailing industry. As a result, MGI PhotoSuite is recommended by more photo stores than perhaps any other software brand. MGI products are sold through major photo retail chains in the U.S. and Canada, including Ritz Camera, Wolf Camera Centers, MotoPhoto, and Black's Photo. The company's PC PhotoStarter Kit was the first product on the market to bundle film-to-disk conversion service with photo editing software and a roll of film, making it easy for anyone to get into PC photography without having to purchase specialized equipment.
"We congratulate MGI on reaching its new milestone," said Phil Garfinkle, president, PictureVision. "MGI PhotoSuite was one of the first products to support online photo finishing services and has clearly become a stand- out product that has made the photography experience even more convenient. As a result, millions of MGI software users now have access to PhotoNet, allowing them to store, use, save and share photographs over the Internet."
MGI PhotoSuite II Set to Redefine Category
MGI revealed its next generation PC Photography software during a "sneak preview" at Comdex Fall where early takes by industry analysts and journalists suggest MGI PhotoSuite II is destined to redefine the category with its unparalleled combination of powerful functionality and ease-of-use. At a more recent meeting of the influential HAL-PC (Houston Area League Personal Computer) user group, some 1500 members concluded MGI's new software was "sexy", while hundreds pre-ordered the soon-to-be-released version.
"MGI Software gets it," said Suzanne Snygg, analyst, Dataquest. "It is one of the few software companies that truly understands photo trends and its PhotoSuite II hits the mark to achieve the next growth potential in the category." In development for more than 18 months, MGI PhotoSuite II is built from the ground up using new technology called Spectrum, the same technology that was used to build the industry defining video publishing software, MGI VideoWave.
MGI Software Attracts Key Industry Partnerships
In September, Intel Corporation acquired a minority stake in MGI Software to support the company's vision to develop and offer PC photography and video publishing software on Intel-based computers. Both companies also have entered into a related product and market development agreement to advance MGI's PC imaging, video editing and 3-D graphics technologies for the visual and connected PC.
MGI also has joined with Mitsui & Co., Japan's largest company, to address the burgeoning demand for digital photo and video software products in Japan, one of the world's largest markets for such products. MGI PhotoSuite is now available in more than 200 retail outlets throughout Japan. Both companies also are working with many of the world's leading manufacturers who are based in Japan and whose brands dominate computer, digital camera, digital video, scanner and printer markets around the world.
In 1996, Dataquest ranked MGI Software the leader in OEM market share. Year to date, the company has continued to expand its business with original equipment manufacturers around the world, including Sony, Packard Bell NEC, Canon, Yashica, Konica, Agfa, Fuji, Panasonic, JVC, Hitachi, Adaptec, Iomega, Pinnacle, Primax, Diamond Multimedia, and ATI Technologies. MGI is the only company in a position today to offer OEMs a complete photo and video software line specifically designed for non-professionals.
