The analysts are there just to help manipulate trading. the analysts will downgrade a stock and let the brokers know and then they call all their clients and tell them to sell (to generate commisions) and then put out buy ratings later to help them buy the stocks (and generate commissions). You will also see them buying the stocks when they fall to add to their own inventory to sell later at higher prices. (arbitrage)

One thing also, many upgrades and downgrades usually occur towards the end of the month where they can generate commissions and meet production goals for the month.

It's called herd mentality. The analysts are no different from the rest of the herd. Though at the forefront, they too follow the daring few who are willing to standout from the herd, whether such daring prognoses are correct or not.

View it as a trading/investment opportunity when you spot irrational herd mentality. I do.
