Toshiba offers advantages as a company. It manufactures DVD-ROM drives, semiconductors, computers, and consumer electronics equipment -- and settop boxes. I am sure that MSFT was not too happy about Toshiba announcing that it was getting out of the desktop computer business in the U.S. Also, I suspect that Microsoft will write or help write drivers for other DVD-ROM systems. MSFT already has introduced interfaces that make it easier to write your own drivers ...

The Toshiba chip has a PCI bus interface, which the current ZiVA does not have. I expect the ZiVA II to incorporate a PCI interface. This feature may make the Toshiba chip easy to integrate for PC-DVD. ZiVA II should be out soon.
