Regarding ISDN vs. DSL, I really don't think there is anything applicabel to DSL to be learned from the ISDN experience.
ISDN was a solution to a problem nobody really had... and now it's too slow to be of interest.
As to DSL cost, the hardware will come down, leave it to the semiconductor manufacturers, the question is where will the telcos cost it....

Vulkan --

We'll have to agree to disagree on TI's ADSL strategy. Yes, the cable companies are making a lot of noise, but the actual subscriber numbers are much lower than those you see quoted, primarily b/c they often refer to houses passed, not actual subscribers. Even so, cable is making inroads into the highspeed Internet market and if telcos don't get their corporate duffs moving, they'll lose out --- not just Internet customers, but eventually voice as well.

As for DSPs being commodities, I still maintain the C6X and above are a long ways from that.

In terms of telcos deploying, 1998 is the year to watch. If it doesn't start happening in the first six months, then I'll eat humble pie and concede ADSL is another ISDN. Give it some time. After all, the chips aren't even out yet. And God only knows, you can't deploy without the goods.

Regards,

Pat
