After months of consideration, neither Hayes Microcomputer Products Inc. nor Zoom Telephonics Inc. will buy Motorola Inc.'s Modem division, according to company officials.
...

"You'd have to be nuts to buy the company," the source said, referring to the strict terms of the sale.

Sources said any buyer would be prohibited from using the Motorola name for future products coming out of the Huntsville plant, even for a short transition. Motorola's well-known Surfr modems, for instance, could be marketed only as "Surfr" and not "Motorola Surfr."

In addition, Motorola is not including the use of its international sales office in the deal, according to another source.
