DVD in your Lincoln Navigator sports utility vehicle.............................. Alpine Introduces World's First DVD 5.1 Channel Mobile Multimedia System With Dolby Digital Business Wire - December 16, 1997 20:59 %DOLBY-LABS %ALPINE %CALIFORNIA %NEW-YORK %COMPUTERS %ELECTRONICS %COMED %AUTOMOTIVE %ENTERTAINMENT %PRODUCT V%BW P%BW ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jump to first matched term LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 16--In collaboration with Dolby Laboratories, Alpine Electronics, a leader in high quality car audio and navigation products, will debut the first ever DVD 5.1 channel car audio system utilizing Dolby Digital at the 1998 Winter Consumer Electronics Show in their booth at the Sands Convention Center, January 8-11. To celebrate introducing DVD and Dolby Digital into their mobile multi-media platform, Alpine will showcase a working prototype vehicle with this system at the show and announce production schedules and new product information at that time. "Our enthusiasm has never been higher for a new concept in car audio," says Steve Witt, Vice President of Marketing for Alpine Electronics of America. "The car environment is a natural for 5.1 channel sound. Cars have been wired for surround sound for years. The DVD video format is becoming hugely successful. It's transition into mobile electronics takes the car audio experience to a whole new level. In our many years in providing the market with innovative high-end car audio, we've never heard anything like this. It is nothing short of incredible." "This sets a fantastic new benchmark for the car audio experience," says John Kellogg, Dolby's General Manager of Multichannel Audio and Music Production. "We applaud Alpine for having the foresight to bring DVD and Dolby Digital to the mobile environment." Adds Kellogg, "Introducing 5.1 channel audio into the car environment using the DVD video format and Dolby Digital will instill a new level of confidence in consumers about DVD once they see that the music and film DVDs they buy for their homes can also be enjoyed in their cars. It will also pave the way for the coming of the DVD audio format." The vehicle exhibited at the show will be a 1998 Lincoln Navigator sports utility vehicle. It will feature a custom 5.1 channel audio system with Dolby Digital playback, Dolby Pro Logic and enhanced stereo modes. Separate left, center, and right speaker configurations and motorized flip up color LCD screens for both the front and rear seats are included along with surround speakers mounted in the rear ceiling panels and subwoofers in the rear cargo area. The system will showcase a car DVD video player that will also play standard CD's. In addition, the vehicle will also feature Alpine's car navigation system with real-time traffic information. Back seat passengers will also be able to play Nintendo N64 format video games on the system. Alpine's introduction of DVD and Dolby Digital car audio is expected to be a big boost for the DVD format. Over 40% of Alpine's specialist dealers are car audio only retailers. This will expose the DVD video format and Dolby Digital to a very large group of new retailers and customers who would not likely go looking for it in a hi-fi retail store.
