"What gods there were, and gods that have ever been, were always created by man's own imagination." Of course! Who else could imagine them? Not mice, surely! Maybe goats! Goats are actually very smart! Yes, we have invented thousands of gods. At first they were just very powerful combinations of heroic men with admixtures of our favourite animals (such as goats)! Later, we invented a single god as a "first cause"--because we always like to supply an explanation for everything. The very idea of this latter invention, however, is dreadfully odd and absurdly contrived. Men can build skyscrapers and some pretty great stuff by combining a lot of contractors and talents. But could we ever build even one sun??? Not a chance! So imagining someone who can build and destroy anything and everything out of his body or mind (because of course even an imaginary being could not be more than himself!) is cute--but rather without any substance! What could the existence of such an imaginary thing be predicated upon? I can imagine things that are much much more sensible! In any event, I was speaking of a philosophical god. It is only too obvious (as you said) that the gods we have invented to worship and obey (and use for our self-serving objectives) are chimeras and reified phantasms of the mind. Our gods are dark, deadly, racist, and tribal--just as we are dark, deadly, racist, and tribal.
