Compromise is not always what it seems.

Smart people are able to sniff out a fake.
Corrupt Scenario:
1) You demand 1 dollar from me. I tell you it is an intolerable demand. Then when all is about to get crazy we agree to compromise for 50 cents at the last minute.
2) Six months later you demand another dollar and remind me how compromise avoids the crazy outcome, so you get another 50 cents.
3) Now you've got the dollar. Not genuine compromise.

Also: Something you don't seem to appreciate is that principle is not subject to compromise for people of honor. So when the issue is a matter of principle you are usually not going to get a compromise, and that is the way it should be.
