This is the SAME
THING!

except the stakes are exponentially higher. And Gates realises that, which is one reason internal ms documents show executives scared of netscape, where those execs decided the best approach is to COPY (familiar concept at MS) everything netscape does to crush it. The internet and the network are making windows irrelevant as people LIVE in the browser, as admitted by internal document at MS.

Furthermore, by the admittance of more internal documents, the browser and windoze were refered to as SEPARATE products as late as NOVEMBER NINETEEN NINTY SIX. SUDDENLY, microsoft re-writes history by saying the DOJ was aware of their intention to integrate as early as 1994 (Well, good, at least MS admits implicitly they're separate products) But waitaminute: did ms know what a browser IS back then? Maybe Yes. But my guess is, at best, Gates thought he's ahead, and can proceed slowly. At best.

Regardless, the government has decided already: they are separate products.

PS, just in case, cnet.com has all related issues to the subject.

...you used to have to buy a TCP/IP stack separately, but now its in the OS. I can almost see that because the Network card is the hardware and this is just the standard way to interface to it.

>> No it isn't.

Most of what goes through my network card is TCP/IP. Maybe my terminology is off. I don't want to argue about my terminology.

Bingo! So why do you consider the browser to be anything other than an accessory? It is NO DIFFERENT than the file manager. When MS started including File Manager as part of its OS people like Norton and Lotus complained because it made Norton Utilities and Lotus Magellan less attractive. This is the SAME THING!

Sounds like we mostly agree. It is almost the same thing. The implications of getting the masses all to use IE, or Netscape go way beyond that one product though. I always really liked Norton Utilities, I wonder why I never see any of their software anymore? I know they are still around, but no one I know uses their software. I would rather pay $30 for an OS and use the $60 thats left over to buy a nice File browser/compressor, etc. But I don't have that choice anymore. The whole $90 went to the OS/combined accessories.

Robert, please, do not attempt to compare Norton Utiities or Lotus Magellan with anything Microsoft bundles with Windows--with particular emphasis on Lotus Magellan, one of the four most elegant programs ever written, IMHO. BTW, I still use Norton Utilities in conjunction with Central Point's PC Tools version 6.0. I cannot imagine using my computer without Lotus Magellan.

I rely heavily on these three programs to sort out the simplistic and altogether cryptic and useless messages given by Windows and Windows programs when these programs go haywire (as often they do) or otherwise do not perform as expected.

I sincerely wish that Lotus could be pursuaded to release Magellan's code to the public domain so that it might be updated by the Magellan gurus among us.
